Two first-half strikes by Fredrick Mulambia and Prince Mumba proved decisive as Power Dynamo’s impressive run catapulted them six points clear at the top of the Zambian Premier League with 54 points in their midweek fixture against Mutondo Stars.

Mulambia’s opening goal in the 22nd minute set the tone for the match. He capitalised on Eddy Ishmael Ankobo’s blocked shot, slotting the ball past the goalkeeper. Prince Mumba then doubled Power Dynamos’ advantage with a powerful left-footed strike after 32 minutes of play.

Although both goals were scored in the first half, the second half saw an increase in intensity, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. Each side hit the crossbar, but Power Dynamos held on to claim the three points and another impressive clean sheet for the goalkeeper, Willard Mwanza.

With just six games left to conclude the 2024/25 campaign, second-placed Zesco United, who have 48 points from 27 games, can reduce the deficit to three points if they overcome Green Buffaloes in their next match.

Coach Osward Mutapa made several changes to his team, substituting Austin Muwowo, Prince Mumba, Eddy Ishmael Ankobo, John Soko, and Fredrick Mulambia with Brian Masanyinga, Jacob Kaunda, Osmond Chita, Aaron Katebe, and Jericho Mwila to see out the game.

In his post-match comments, Mutapa expressed optimism about his side’s chances of winning the title but warned that six games and 18 points are at stake, and his team will need to approach each upcoming fixture as a final.

“Six games are a lot, and in the game of football, anything can happen, Mutapa said.

Additionally, the pace of these games is accelerating, and several of our players have indicated their need for rest. The break gives us the perfect opportunity to give these players the much-needed rest,” he added.

Power Dynamos’ next match is against second-placed Zesco United at Arthur Davies Stadium on March 26, 2025, after the two-week break.
