Power Dynamos’ hopes of clinching the ABSA Cup were dashed on April 26, 2025, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against defending champions Red Arrows Football Club at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The match saw Power Dynamos dominate possession in the first half, showcasing a well-coordinated midfield that pressed Red Arrows into their own half.
Despite creating three clear-cut chances early on, including opportunities for Fredrick Mulambia, Chifundo Mphasi, and Jacob Kaunda, Power failed to convert, leaving the scoreline level at halftime.
Red Arrows faced an early setback when Ackim Mumba got an early stretcher, leading to Angel Lubamba’s introduction.
After a brief water break due to very hot conditions, Power Dynamos had a chance to take the lead, but Titus Chansa’s indecisiveness resulted in another missed opportunity.
The second half saw a tactical shift from Red Arrows, with former Power Dynamos captain Godfrey Ngwenya coming on to influence the game. Their breakthrough came in the 57th minute when Lubamba set up Joseph Phiri for the only goal of the match.
In response, Power’s Head Coach Osward Mutapa made three substitutions to regain control, but Red Arrows held firm to secure their place in the final round of the tournament.
In a post-match reaction, Coach Mutapa emphasised on the importance of converting chances into goals, especially in knockout stages. “We controlled the game and enjoyed possession, but we were not clinical enough to capitalise on our chances. Red Arrows scored their chance and won. Congratulations to them,” said Mutapa.
The Aba Yellow are gearing up for a crucial Week 33 match against Green Eagles at their home ground in Kitwe as they are set to be crowned champions if they carry the day.
